The building industry plays a vital role in shaping the Built Environment, which involves several crosscutting issues including but not limited to; design, construction, economics, law & public policy, health, environmental sustainability, technology, culture and obviously many more. In the making of such an essential realm of a society, it is not difficult to imagine the enormity of responsibility laid upon all actors of the industry towards creating a balanced and conducive man-made environment, which is responsive to the well-being of communities sustainably. None of the actors & issues can act and stand in isolation claiming to achieve the ever growing demand of improved built environment. Synergetic effort is thus mandatory and inevitable. Systems of collaboration and delivery of projects are in place and in continuous improvement. Moreover, actors of the industry also are expected to deliver their function properly in order to attain the required improved built environment.
The architects' role and responsibility in the building industry towards delivering sustainable built environment stretching from the inception to realization is crucially indispensable. If architects are to play their crucial role in fulfilling their social and professional responsibility, it is essential to maintain, improve and advance competency in all aspects of their involvement including and beyond designing & construction of buildings.
In light of this role of architects, entrusted by the society it is serving, the Association of Ethiopian Architects (AEA) recognized the needs of improvement in competencies of professional practice and the need to prepare for the ever changing complexity of the industry. The AEA believed it is high time to engage in the capacity building of its members, which is among the elements of broad spectrum strategies it has set to work on. It is now a global phenomenon in the building industry to provide lifelong professional continuing education program to architects in practice aiming to advance the profession through mastering new knowledge and skills. Towards implementing such scheme of continuous capacity building, AEA is working to collaborate with local & international established higher institutions, the industry and public offices in developing the system itself, which is new in its nature for nation, and in recruiting continuing education providers.
The Association of Ethiopian Architects (AEA) will strive to continue its collaborative work in advocacy, public outreach and capacity building of its members towards fulfilling its societal and professional responsibility. Finally It is to be remembered that seven head is too little for such huge responsibility and your active enrolment as members of the association is thus crucial, which we count on.
